The GCPL Yellow Hat Report
The restrooms have been completed and available for use. They are beautiful; We couldn't be more thrilled with how the renovations turned out. Now, the restrooms are ADA-compliant and more accessible to all of our patrons. Thank you for your patience as we worked to complete this project.
This is the GCPL Yellow Hat Report signing off. As always, thank you for tuning in!
Check it out!!!
The crew finished painting the restrooms and started installing the sinks. They also finished installing the tiles in the lobby and started painting it too! Over the next week, the crew will be installing the new flooring in the lobby. It looks like we're on schedule to have the renovations completed by the end of the year!
Definitely stay tuned to the GCPL Yellow Hat Report as we continue to follow this developing story.
Take a look! The big tarp that once blocked the restrooms has been taken down. The crew has been hard at work trying to finish the work in the restrooms and the lobby. The sinks still have to be installed in the restrooms, and the flooring needs to be put down in the lobby. The crew still needs to paint, and as you can see, they have started prepping the walls for paint.
If all goes according to plan, the work should be completed by the end of December. Stay tuned to the GCPL Yellow Hat Report as we continue to follow this developing story.
There has been a great deal of progress since our last report. The crew has been hard at work installing the ceiling tile in the restrooms and lobby. They have also built the restroom stalls, installed the toilet paper dispensers, put up an infant changing table in both restrooms, and installed the restrooms' mirrors.
The crew still has to install the sinks in the restrooms and paint, but they are coming along beautifully. The lobby will be getting its new flooring in the coming weeks, so be sure to stay tuned to the GCPL Yellow Hat Report for the latest!
Let there be light! The crew has started installing the new lights in the restrooms and the lobby. If you recall, they began working on the wiring for the lights back in early October.
There is still much work to be done. The restroom stalls have to be built, the sinks have to be installed, not to mention the flooring still needs to be put down in the lobby. Stay tuned to the GCPL Yellow Hat Report, as we continue to follow this story.
In our last report, crews finished the new handicap parking area, and it's open for business. They are continuing the much needed work on the restrooms, and they are coming along nicely. As you can see, the restrooms have new flooring and tile. The new fixtures came in and the crews immediately went to work installing the new toilets. Of course, there is still a lot of work to do. The sinks, the dividing walls and wiring all have to be completed. Not to mention, the crew still has to renovate the lobby.
We will continue to keep you updated on the progress of our renovations. As always, thanks for tuning in to the GCPL Yellow Hat Report. We'll see you next time!
Crews painted the lines and handicap signs in the new parking area. They finished paving the area on Thursday afternoon and returned the same evening to paint. They also covered the paint on the old handicap parking area.

The crew is "paving" the way for our new ADA-compliant and handicap-accessible parking. On Monday, October 1, they dumped and spread gravel in the parking area. Now, they are using a steamroller, along with water, to crush the gravel and help the rock spread more evenly. This is the ensure the parking area has a smoother surface once the asphalt is put down.
While one crew is working on the new parking area, another crew is hard at work renovating the restrooms in the lobby. We had to go undercover to snap pictures of the restrooms. As you can see, they have been completely emptied and have brand new purple drywall. The crew is now working to install new lighting in the restrooms by connecting the wiring in the lobby.
There's still a lot of work left to do before the renovations are completed, but we'll be right here to keep you updated on this developing story. If you would like to see how the crew paved the parking area, visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/gastonlibrary.

The crew built a new sidewalk connector from Garrison Boulevard to the library sidewalk. They dug the sidewalk this morning using shovels and an excavator (or digger). By noon, they had poured and spread the concrete. This new extension is ADA compliant and handicap accessible.
For the last two days, the crew has been working on the new ADA-compliant, handicap parking. They built a new curb and continued digging up the dirt and grass. Today, a dump truck hauled the dirt mound away, and the crew spent the afternoon preparing the site so that the asphalt can be poured.
We will continue to follow this developing story. Visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/gastonlibrary to see video of the new sidewalk.
As always, thanks for tuning in to the GCPL Yellow Hat Report. We'll see you next time!
Crews continued digging up the grassy knoll and started loading the mountain of dirt and grass into a dump truck.
At the same time, they also started pouring concrete for the new sidewalks. They poured concrete for the sidewalk to the right of the main entrance this morning, and believe it or not, it is already dry. The sidewalk in front of the main entrance has been widened and flattened so that it is wheelchair accessible. Crews poured concrete for it this afternoon. Needless to say, the crew spent the entire day sloshing around, as they continually poured and smoothed the concrete.
Want to watch the crew pour and smooth the concrete? Visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/gastonlibrary.
As always, thanks for tuning into the GCPL Yellow Hat Report. We hope you have a great weekend, and we'll see you next time!

After demolishing the concrete sidewalk to the right of the main entrance to the library, construction crews dug up the portion in front of the main entrance and brought in wood to build the outline for the new sidewalk. Don't fret! Crews placed plywood down so that patrons can still enter through the main entrance.

Crews began demolishing the grassy knoll in the traffic circle. They used bulldozers to dig up the grass, dirt, and concrete. Sure, it looks like a mess now, but when they finish we'll have brand new ADA-compliant, handicap-accessible parking.

So, this is Where the Sidewalk Ends. Maybe?
The sidewalk to the right of the front entrance (when facing the doors) is no more. It dissappeared into clouds of dust and was swallowed by the sound of this massive jackhammer. As the machine slammed into the concrete over and over again, it nearly shook the Library. Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! There's nothing left but an open slab of dirt with fragments of concrete that once held our book and audiovisual return drop boxes.
We will continue to follow this developing story. Be sure to check out the video on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/gastonlibrary. Thanks for tuning in to the GCPL Yellow Hat Report! Until next time...
The way is shut and you shall not pass! (That's for all of our Lord of the Rings fans out there!) The traffic circle in front of the library is now closed. Crews arrived at approximately 9:00 a.m. to assemble the fence that now blocks the driveway that so many of us have used. As you can see below, it was definitely a two-man job!
Check this out! The ceiling tile that once graced the Lobby is completely demolished, right along with the old partitions from the restroom stalls. Apparently, one of them was good enough to use as a ramp leading into the dumpster! It was indeed time for an upgrade.
We will continue to follow this developing story. Thanks for tuning in to the GCPL Yellow Hat Report! Until next time...
We're officially under construction! Work began on the restrooms in the lobby at 6:30 a.m. As you can see, it's completely blocked off. The ceiling tile has been removed as well. Just imagine the magic tricks that are going on behind that curtain! We're so excited!
We decided to relocate the book and audiovisual return drop boxes; they are now located at the back of the library near Staff parking.
Continue to stay tuned to the GCPL Yellow Hat Report for more updates!
During this project the traffic circle will be closed and the outside book drops will be temporarily relocated to the back side of the library. We encourage you to use the second driveway to reach the book drops. The sidewalk, in front of the library, and wall drop will not be closed. Please watch your step!
The Main Library's first floor restrooms and lobby are getting a face lift!
Beginning on Monday, September 10, we will begin renovating the restrooms to ensure they are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). For this reason, the restrooms will be out of service. For your convenience, there are additional restrooms available on the 3rd floor near the computers, and an ADA-compliant portable facility will be located just outside the lobby. During part of this project, the traffic circle in front of the library will be closed, and the outside book drops will be relocated or closed. We do apologize for the inconvenience.
The good news is that once the project is completed, not only will the Main Library have new ADA-compliant restrooms on the first floor but a long-overdue makeover to the existing lobby! As a bonus, there will be new accessible parking in front of the library.
We encourage you to stay tuned to this section of our website, as well as our social media outlets, as we will continously update the progress of our work!
